Among the Disney movies, Aladdin is perhaps the closest to the hearts of Filipinos as Lea Salonga lent her beautiful singing voice to Princess Jasmine in the animated movie we all loved. This makes Philippines the perfect country to kick-off the staging of Aladdin: The New Stage Musical in Asia.
Last Saturday, our family got the chance to watch it and all of us had a blast! The stage musical offered us a different take on a story we all knew by heart.
Songs that didn’t make the cut in the movie were added in the stage production to spice up the repertoire such as “Proud of Your Boy” and “Call Me A Princess.” An additional duet for Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, “A Million Miles Away,” was also included.
The emotional Aladdin solo “Proud of Your Boy” was originally part of the movie, but then they had to make the painful decision to not include it in the final edit. Here’s the backstory:
We loved the flying carpet that was a key element as Aladdin and Princess Jasmine sang the Academy Award winning song “A Whole New World.”
What really worked for this musical is its cast. They picked artists who fit the roles perfectly!
Tom Rodriguez who is known for his TV and movie appearances played the title role. It’s amazing how he looked and sounded like the Aladdin we grew up with! You’d think he’s the incarnation of the film character. With his singing and acting chops, it didn’t appear like he’s a stage newbie. I think Tom Rodriguez is better off performing in plays and musicals.
K-la Rivera possesses the royal charm and vocal versatility needed to play the part of Princess Jasmine. She delivered an impressive performance even with the varying genres of songs. Give it more time, she can make it big in theater with the likes of Monique Wilson and, of course, Lea Salonga.
The playful role of Genie was played by Aiza Seguerra. We all know her, but not everyone knows how good she is as a musical theater actress. We usually hear her carry mellow tunes, but she showed a different side with the power and energy that Genie’s role demanded. Aiza was an explosion of talent!
Don’t miss the chance to see Aladdin: The New Stage Musical. It runs until next month. Watch it with your family and bring the little ones!
